A trip to Iran, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan to research the origin of Kangal (Karabash) Dogs
In January 2006 a trip was made by Orhan Yılmaz to this region to research the
origin of Kangal (Karabash) Dogs. During his travels in Iran, Afghanistan and
Turkmenistan he had the opportunity to observe and photograph dogs resembling
the Kangal (Karabash) phenotype. From his investigations and interviews, he
learned that these Kangal (Karabash)-like dogs are also found in other Central
Asian Republics. They are still present in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizistan
and Tajikistan. In western Mongolia, is the county of Bayan Ölgiy with 80% of
the population of Turkish Kazakh origin. He was told that among the sheep
herders here, Kangal (Karabash)-like dogs are still found.
There is no record of Turks migrating from Anatolia to Central Asia. However,
migration took place 1000 years ago from Central Asia to Anatolia. Therefore the
Kangal (Karabash) and Akbash Dogs must have come from Central Asia to Anatolia.
