The Future
To ensure the future of the Kangal (Karabash)
Dog a number of measures need to be taken.
1. The greatest threat to the Kangal (Karabash) Dog is the lack of a responsible
authority. Above all, it is imperative that those concerned with this subject
take charge of it. The man in the street has become the expert. Placing himself
in the position of the TSE (Turkish Standards Institute), he declares the breed
standard.
2. The Kangal (Karabash) Dog breed does not belong exclusively to Sivas or to
the Kangal district. The TSE standard contains ridiculous statements, such as
'…. bred in the Sivas area, particularly the Kangal district.' The Kangal (Karabash)
Dog is a Turkish dog breed.
3. A Kangal (Karabash) Dog Breeding Association should be founded. Kangal (Karabash)
Dog breeders must organize. Such an association should provide members with
various advantages such as financial aid, incentives and bonuses.
4. One of the most harmful actions against the Kangal (Karabash) Dog is the
breeding of non-standard dogs. Breeding for the tallest shoulder height, the
heaviest weight and the biggest head means the flouting of breed standards and
the deformation of breed characteristics. Every dog which departs from these
standards is non-standard.
5. Efforts should be made to disseminate information about the Kangal (Karabash)
Dog. More symposiums, academic conferences, festivals and shows should be held.
Films, documentaries and advertisements on the subject should be supported by
the Ministry of Culture. A well organised promotion campaign will raise public
knowledge and awareness of the Kangal (Karabash) Dog.
